3.6. Replacement of motive oil and oil filter

When replacing oil it is necessary to replace also an oil filter. At severe conditions of operation as, for example, frequent short trips, frequent cold starts and operation on dusty roads, replace oil and the filter through each 5000 km of a run.

Regular and rather frequent performance of replacement of motive oil is one of the main procedures of preventive maintenance of the car lying within qualification of the average amateur mechanic. Eventually motive oil is subject to aging that is shown in its gradual fluidifying and pollution, leading to premature wear of internal components of the engine. In spite of the fact that separate sources recommend to make replacement of an oil filter only at every second change of motive oil, authors of the present manual consider that in view of relative insignificance of cost of a replaceable component and importance of influence of its state on serviceability of functioning of the engine and efficiency of its return, makes sense to change the filter every time when replacing oil.

Make sure available near at hand all materials and tools necessary for performance of replacement of oil and oil to a filtraprigotovta also enough rags and old newspapers for collecting traces of the spilled oil. When replacing oil will be required also sealing ring from aluminum or copper for a drain stopper (it is sometimes delivered together with an oil filter), a cartridge for an oil filter, and on l DOHC 1.0 and 1.2 engines - the filter and sealing rings for a cover of the filter and, if necessary, a drain stopper.

1 — Drain capacity - has to be superficial and rather wide to minimize probability of spilling of oil on the earth
2 — Rubber gloves - will help to protect hands from burns at inevitable hit of oil on them during a reversing of a drain stopper of the pallet of a case
3 — the Collar - sometimes the drain stopper is tightened rather hardly that demands considerable effort at its reversing

4 — the Replaceable face head - is applied together with a collar or the drive equipped with a ratchet at a reversing of a drain stopper, has to correspond to the last by the size
5 — the Tape key - allows to turn out a full-line oil filter in the conditions of access limited to it
6 - The special cap key - is put on an end face of the filter and can then rotate by means of a collar or the ratchet drive, has to answer the filter case by the size

For the purpose of providing free access to the pallet of a case and to an oil filter lift the car the winch, tire out it on a platform, or and establish to a poddomkratta on props.

Do not perform any works under the car which is propped up only under a bumper or the lifted situation withheld in only as a jack!


  1. Get under the car and get acquainted with an arrangement of a drain stopper of the pallet of a case and an oil filter Remember that the power unit and components of system of production of the fulfilled gases during the whole time of implementation of the procedure will remain rather hot, - think over the scheme of safe manipulations with hands to avoid casual contact with the warmed surfaces.

On petrol engines oil can be pumped out by means of the probe through the directing oil level probe tube.

  1. Make sure of horizontal position of position of the car on props or the elevator. Warm up the engine up to the normal working temperature, - hot oil has bigger fluidity and better washes away slime and rainfall. Use the compelled idle time to spread out all necessary tools and materials in a convenient order. Kill the engine and uncover a jellied mouth of motive oil.
  2. Make sure of reliability of fixing of the car in the lifted situation.
  3. Being careful, get under the car and establish drain capacity under the case pallet, with that calculation that at the first moment the stream will follow through an opening with a decent pressure. Trying not to touch the warmed surfaces of the power unit and components of system of release, turn out a drain stopper from the lower part of the pallet of a case. Depending on oil temperature, at a final stage of a reversing of a stopper it is possible to use rubber gloves, or to refuse them.
  4. Allow oil to flow down freely in capacity, as appropriate correcting position of the last in process of weakening of a pressure of a stream. Check the merged oil for presence at it of metal sawdust.
  5. After oil stops following from an engine case, carefully wipe a drain stopper and the surface of the pallet around a drain opening with pure rags, - to them can podlipnut small metal sawdust which will immediately lead to pollution of fresh oil.
  6. On all engines, except l DOHC 1.0 and 1.2, establish a drain stopper with a new sealing ring and tighten it with the required effort. On the turbodiesel engine of 1.5 l disconnect the tank of cooling liquid and take him aside.
  7. On all engines, except l DOHC 1.0 and 1.2, Move drain capacity under an oil filter.

Location of an oil filter is presented. For removal of the filter it is possible or to use the special tool, or to insert sideways the sharp screw-driver into the filter and to turn out the filter.

  1. Merge oil from an oil filter in the substituted capacity.
  2. Clear a filter flange fuel.
  3. Remove the consolidation remains.
  4. At installation of rubber consolidation on the new filter slightly oil consolidation by motive.
  5. Screw the new filter by hand. If consolidation of the filter lies on the block of cylinders, tighten the filter for a half-turn. Pay attention to the instructions given on the filter.

  1. After oil flows down from the filter, take out the filtering element.
  2. Establish a cover (3) of an oil filter with the filtering element (1) and a new sealing ring (2)

  1. Tighten a drain stopper with a new sealing ring with effort of 10 Nanometers.

  1. At the corresponding complete set establish into place protection of a case. Collect traces of the spilled oil, take the drain capacity and tools from under the car. Lower the car on the earth.
  2. Fill in fresh oil in a reception mouth of the engine, - for the purpose of minimization of losses use a funnel. Having filled in about a half of the required quantity, wait several minutes, having allowed oil to flow down in the pallet, then check its level on the measuring probe (see the Section of Check of levels of liquids). If level is above the lower mark, start the engine, having provided circulation of fresh oil (the control lamp of pressure of oil at the first start can go out with the certain delay connected with need of filling of volume of the filtering element).

Rise in level of oil from the lower (MIN) mark in the probe to top (MOVE) requires slightly less than one liter of oil.

  1. Having allowed the engine to work within about a minute, again muffle it, and at once glance under the car, checking whether there are no leaks through a drain stopper and the full-line filter. In case of need tighten the component allowing leaks a little.
  2. During circulation of oil on the engine (about 1 minute), there is a filling of a new oil filter. Now it is necessary to check again the level of oil and in case of need to add still some of its quantity, having brought level to the top mark in a probe edge (check you make several minutes later after switching off of the engine, - oil has to manage to flow down completely in the case pallet).

Pump out excess of oil since otherwise consolidations of the engine and the catalytic converter can be damaged.

  1. On the turbodiesel engine of 1.5 l install the tank.
  2. During the first several trips after change of motive oil try to check its level as often as possible.
  3. The fulfilled oil merged from the engine is not subject to the secondary use and has to be handed over on special place of acceptance. Do not merge working off on the earth at all or in the sewerage - pour it in hermetically closed container and at the first opportunity hand over.
  4. To improve engine service conditions, it is necessary to apply oils of one type and one brand. Therefore at each replacement remember oil or write down its brands and viscosity. Use of oils of various types is not recommended. It is also not recommended to mix oils of one type, but various brands. Oils of one type and one brand, but various viscosity, if necessary, can be added in system upon transition from a season by a season.
