1.9. Diagnostics of malfunctions

The description of diagnostics of electronic control systems and diagnostic codes are provided in the Head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine.

In this Section the simplest scheme of clarification of the reasons of the malfunctions and refusals happening in knots and systems of the vehicle is offered. Refusals and their possible reasons are broken into groups on a sign of the relation to certain components or systems of the car, such as the engine, the cooling system, etc., besides, in the text references to Chapters and Sections concerning these problems are given.

Remember that the successful completion of search of causes of defect is not the black magic available only to skilled professional mechanics at all, and is defined by a combination of a certain knowledge and patient, systematic approach to a problem research. It is necessary to move always from simple to difficult, to bring each check to the logical end and to try not to pass the obvious facts - everyone can forget to fill fuel in the fuel tank or to leave included in lighting fixtures for the night.

And at last, it is always necessary to try to make a clear picture of development of malfunction and to take the corresponding steps for prevention of a recurrence. If the failure of electric equipment happened for a cause of infringement of quality of contact, check a condition of all other contacts and electric sockets of system at the same time. If the same safety lock several times in a row continues to fuse, there is no sense in its further replacement - it is necessary to try to find out a cause of failure. Remember that failure of a minor component can be a sign of violation of functioning of more important knot or the whole system.

Engine

If the engine is not started, it is necessary to analyse a situation. That the engine in general could be started, two main conditions have to be satisfied. Air-fuel mix has to come to cylinders, and on a spark plug the spark has to be developed. Therefore, first, it is necessary to check whether fuel moves. As at the same time it is necessary to work, it is described in the Head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases.

To define whether the spark is developed, it is necessary to turn out candles, to insert into tips and to put separately to weight. At the same time you do not hold a tip or a cable of ignition with hands, and use well isolated nippers. Ask the assistant to start the engine. If the spark is absent, define a cause of failure, being guided by the Head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine.

Procedures of diagnostics of an electronic control system and codes of malfunctions are provided in the Head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine.

The engine is not turned in attempts of its start

  1. Corrosion of plugs of the battery takes place or fastening of tips of wires on them weakened. Check a condition of plugs and tips. Tighten terminal clips, if necessary remove corrosion traces.
  2. The battery is discharged or faulty. If tips of wires pure are also reliably fixed on battery plugs, turn the ignition key in position of ON, then include headlights and/or screenwashes. If this electric equipment does not function, the battery is discharged.
  3. Transmission it is inexact it is established in situation "P" (AT) or on neutral transfer (RKPP), or coupling is squeezed not completely out.
  4. Conducting in a chain of system of start is torn off or fastening of wires on plugs weakened. Check a condition of wires, plugs and electric sockets of the battery, traction relay of a starter and the lock of ignition.
  5. The gear wheel of a starter is jammed in a gear wreath of a flywheel. On the models equipped with RKPP establish it on transfer and, ceilings manually the car, turn that its engine. At the first opportunity remove a starter and check a condition of a gear wheel and a gear wreath of a flywheel.
  6. The traction relay of a starter (The head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine) is faulty.
  7. The starter (The head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine) is faulty.
  8. The ignition lock is faulty.

The engine is turned, but not started

Petrol engine

  1. Start is incorrectly made. Cock the parking brake, squeeze out a coupling pedal. On models with AT press and hold a brake pedal. On AT install the selector in situation "P" or "N". Do not squeeze out an accelerator. Turn the ignition key and hold until the engine is started. If the engine is not started within 20 seconds, or start becomes deaf right after, repeat process of start at half the squeezed-out accelerator pedal. As soon as the engine is started, release the ignition key. On a frost it is below -15 °C and at the height more than 1000 m above sea level start you spend not less than 10 seconds with half the squeezed-out pedal. Surely at once begin the movement. In frosty weather let's the engine get warm within at least 30 seconds. If the engine is not started, in 10 seconds, interrupt start and repeat attempt in 30 seconds.

Several unsuccessful attempts of start in a row can lead to failure of the catalytic converter as a result of explosive combustion of the last fuel of system of production of the fulfilled gases which got inside

On the hot engine right after implementation of start add a little gas.

  1. The engine immobilizator is faulty or is not disconnected.
  2. The safety lock of the electric fuel pump / electronic system of injection is faulty (see the Head Onboard electric equipment).
  3. The empty fuel tank or low-quality fuel is filled in.
  4. The air filter is strongly polluted. Leak of vacuum in elements of air supply, malfunction in a control system of injection of fuel and ignition takes place.
  5. The battery is discharged (the engine is turned too slowly). Check functioning of electric equipment.
  6. Terminal connections of the battery are oxidized, or their fastening weakened
  7. The fuel pump is faulty, its safety lock fused, or the pump relay is damaged. Check for hearing serviceability of functioning of the pump at inclusion of ignition (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases).
  8. Components of system of ignition (The head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine) are damaged or excessively moistened.
  9. Spark plugs are worn-out or faulty, or the candle gap (The head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine) is incorrectly exposed.
  10. Conducting of an electric contour of system of start is torn off or disconnected, or fastening of wires on plugs weakened.
  11. Conducting of a contour of the coil of ignition is torn off or disconnected, or fastening of wires on coil plugs (The head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine) weakened.
  12. The safety lock of the control unit of the engine, the pulse sensor, the sensor of temperature of cooling liquid or the soaked-up air is damaged (The head Onboard electric equipment).
  13. Compression pressure fell. Replace sealing laying of a head of cylinders, in case of need execute recovery repair of the engine.

Diesel engine

  1. Start is incorrectly made. On the cold engine and at an external temperature below +8 °C cock the parking brake, squeeze out a coupling pedal. Include neutral transfer (models with RKPP) / transfer the selector lever to situation "P" or "N" (models from AT). Turn the ignition key in situation II and wait for shutdown of a control lamp of preheat. As soon as the control lamp goes out, start the engine, without squeezing out the accelerator pedal. At emergence of irregular flashes do not switch off a starter until the engine does not start working evenly (but no more than 30 seconds). If the engine is not started, through half of minute, repeat start, in a former manner.

In the course of preheat it is not necessary to include onboard consumers of the electric power (lighting fixtures, screen wipers, heating of back glass, etc.).

On the cold engine and at an external temperature above +8 °C, and also at the warm engine preheat is not applied. The engine can be started at once and without squeezing of the accelerator pedal.

  1. The engine immobilizator is faulty
  2. The safety lock of the electric fuel pump, or system of preheat is faulty (see the Head Onboard electric equipment).
  3. Serviceability of functioning of system of preheat is broken.
  4. There is no tension on the electromagnetic locking valve. Connect to the switch the voltmeter or a sampler on a light-emitting diode. Include ignition, - the light-emitting diode has to light up. Otherwise it is necessary to check an electrical wiring of the corresponding chain for break. In case of need make the corresponding recovery repair.
  5. The electromagnetic locking valve is faulty. Check reliability of fastening of the electromagnetic switch, check contacts. Switch on and off ignition, - in the switch the click has to sound.
  6. Damage to the line of supply of fuel, or hit of air to the fuel highway takes place:
    1. Toplivoprovodny lines are mechanically damaged or littered. Check passability of lines, clean fuel-supply lines, remove from a path, including the filter air traffic jams;
    2. The fuel filter is littered. Replace the filtering element;
    3. It is necessary to check the filter and fuel-supply lines for existence of signs of formation of ice or paraffin in the winter. Put the car in the heated garage, add a little gasoline to a power supply system;
    4. The path ventilation of the fuel tank or the mesh filter of a toplivozabornik is littered. Check, clean the respective lines.
  7. Adjustment of the beginning of supply of fuel is brought down. Check, make the corresponding adjustment.
  8. Nozzles are faulty. For their check turn off consistently cap nuts, - at an otvorachivaniye of a nut of the faulty cylinder turns of the engine will not fall.
  9. The fuel pump of high pressure (FPHP) is faulty. Establish new, or obviously serviceable TNVD for check.
  10. Compression pressure fell. Replace sealing laying of a head of cylinders. In case of need repair the engine.

The starter functions without engine provorachivaniye

  1. The starter gear wheel is jammed. Remove a starter (The head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine) and check its state
  2. Teeth of a gear wheel of a starter or wreath of a flywheel are worn-out or damaged.

Start of the cold engine is complicated

  1. The battery is discharged or insufficiently charged address the Section (The engine is not turned in attempts of its start).
  2. Malfunction of components of a power supply system or electric equipment (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases and System of electric equipment of the engine) takes place.

  5. Compression pressure fell in cylinders.

Start of the hot engine is complicated

Passability of the air filter (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases) is broken.

  1. Malfunction of components of a power supply system or electric equipment (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases and System of electric equipment of the engine) takes place.
  2. Fuel does not reach injectors of system of injection (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases).
  3. Installation of phases of gas distribution of the diesel engine is broken.
  4. Compression pressure (the petrol engine) / fell adjustment of TNVD (the diesel engine) is broken.

Input of a starter in gearing with a flywheel wreath / a driving disk is complicated, or is followed by foreign sounds

  1. Teeths of a gear wheel of a starter or wreath of a flywheel are worn-out or damaged.
  2. Bolts of fastening of a starter are lost or the effort of their tightening weakened.
  3. Internal damage of a starter takes place. Replace a starter.

The engine becomes deaf right after start implementation

  1. The engine immobilizator is faulty.
  2. The electrical wiring is faulty, or fastening of wires on plugs of the coil of ignition or the generator weakened.
  3. Malfunction of components of a power supply system or electric equipment (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases and System of electric equipment of the engine) takes place.
  4. Basic installations of the block of electronic control (ESM) are broken.
  5. Damage to system of release / the catalytic converter takes place.
  6. Losses of depression through the pro-masonry surfaces of the inlet pipeline or case of a throttle take place. Make sure of reliability of tightening of fixing bolts / nuts, check the fact and quality of fastening on the unions on the inlet pipeline of all vacuum hoses. Check a condition of hoses and correctness of their connection (to the unions).
  7. Air (diesel engines) got to a power supply system.

Stability of single turns of the engine is broken

All engines

  1. Depression losses take place. Make sure of reliability of tightening of fixing bolts / nuts, check the fact and quality of fastening on the unions on the inlet pipeline of all vacuum hoses. Wiretap the working engine by means of a stethoscope or a piece of a fuel hose, - existence of the hissing sound will allow to reveal a source of "leak".
  2. It is possible to use solution of soap water for check not less effectively.

  3. Malfunction of components of a power supply system or electric equipment (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases and System of electric equipment of the engine) takes place.
  4. Passability of the valve of system of the operated ventilation of a case (PCV) is broken (Head Dvigateli).
  5. Passability of the air filter (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases) is broken.
  6. The fuel pump does not provide giving of enough fuel to injectors of system of injection (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases).
  7. Leaks through laying of a head of cylinders take place. Perform measurement of compression pressure in engine cylinders.
  8. Working ledges of cams of the camshaft are worn-out (Head Dvigateli).
  9. The gas-distributing belt / chain is incorrectly established, or the effort of his / her tension weakened (The head Nastroyki both routine maintenance of the car and Engines).

Diesel engines

  1. Quality of connections of fuel hoses on TNVD and the fuel filter is broken. Replace fuel hoses, fix them by collars, tighten screws of angular connections.
  2. Fastening of TNVD is mechanically damaged or weakened. Check, tighten fixture.
  3. Are mixed by junctions of lines of giving and return of fuel. Make the corresponding corrections.

Sometimes the screw of nipple connection of the returnable line is marked by the inscription "OUT".

  1. The line of supply of fuel is damaged:
    1. Toplivoprovodny lines are mechanically damaged or littered. Check passability of lines, clean fuel-supply lines, remove from a path, including the filter air traffic jams;
    2. The fuel filter is littered. Replace the filtering element;
    3. It is necessary to check the filter and fuel-supply lines for existence of signs of formation of ice or paraffin in the winter. Put the car in the heated garage, add a little gasoline to a power supply system;
    4. The path ventilation of the fuel tank or the mesh filter of a toplivozabornik is littered. Check, clean the respective lines.
  2. Adjustment of the beginning of supply of fuel is brought down. Check, make the corresponding adjustment.
  3. Nozzles are faulty. Check. Consistently release cap nuts, - at an otvorachivaniye of a nut of the faulty cylinder turns of the engine will not fall.
  4. TNVD is faulty. Establish new, or obviously serviceable TNVD for check.

Stability of functioning of the engine is broken during acceleration

  1. Serviceability of functioning of a power supply system is broken.
  2. Injectors/nozzle (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases) are littered.
  3. Installation of phases of gas distribution (the diesel engine) (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases) is broken.

Admissions of ignition take place during the operation of the engine on single turns

  1. Spark plugs are worn-out or polluted, or the candle gap (The head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine) is incorrectly exposed.
  2. Malfunction of components of a power supply system or electric equipment (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases and System of electric equipment of the engine) takes place.
  3. Candle wires (The head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine) are faulty.
  4. The fuel filter is hammered, or in a tank fuel of poor quality is filled.
  5. Losses of depression in the inlet pipeline, or through hose connections take place.
  6. Compression pressure fell, or uniformity of its distribution between cylinders is broken. Perform measurement of a compression (Head Dvigateli).
  7. Violations in work of a control system of the engine take place.
  8. PCV system hoses are damaged, or their landing on reception unions weakened.

Admissions of ignition at the movement of the car on transfer take place

  1. Passability of the fuel filter is broken or pollution of a power supply system (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases) takes place.
  2. Spark plugs are faulty or polluted or the candle gap (The head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine) is incorrectly exposed.
  3. Malfunction of components of a power supply system or electric equipment (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases and System of electric equipment of the engine) takes place.
  4. Defect of candle wires (The head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine) takes place.
  5. Components of systems of decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases are faulty.
  6. Compression pressure fell, or uniformity of its distribution between cylinders is broken. Perform measurement of a compression (Head Dvigateli).
  7. The system of ignition (The head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine) is faulty.
  8. Losses of depression on the throttle case, the inlet pipeline or through vacuum hoses take place
  9. The fuel pump does not provide a sufficient pressure (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases).
  10. Passability of the ventilating valve of the fuel tank (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases) is broken.
  11. Passability of fuel lines (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases) is broken.
  12. Serviceability of functioning of a power supply system (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases) is broken.

The engine spontaneously becomes deaf

  1. Adjustment of turns of idling is broken.
  2. Passability of the fuel filter is broken or pollution of a power supply system (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases) takes place.
  3. Air (diesel engines) got to fuel system.
  4. Passability of a path of system of ventilation of the fuel tank is broken.
  5. The refusal of components of a power supply system or information sensors (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases) takes place.
  6. Components of systems of decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases are faulty.
  7. Spark plugs are faulty or polluted, or the candle gap is incorrectly exposed (The head Nastroyki and routine maintenance of the car). Also check a condition of candle wires (The head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine).
  8. Losses of depression on the throttle case, or through vacuum hoses take place

The engine does not develop full capacity

All engines

  1. Malfunction of components of a power supply system or electric equipment (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases and System of electric equipment of the engine) takes place.
  2. Passability of the air cleaner is broken. Clean, or replace the air filter.
  3. Spark plugs are faulty, or the candle gap is incorrectly exposed (The head Nastroyki and routine maintenance of the car).
  4. The ignition coil (The head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine) is faulty.
  5. The ATF level does not conform to requirements of Specifications (The head Nastroyki both routine maintenance of the car and Automatic 4-staged transmission).
  6. Coupling revolves (The head Stsepleniye and power shafts).
  7. Passability of the fuel filter is broken or pollution of a power supply system (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases) takes place.
  8. Fuel not of that grade is filled. Fill in in a tank fuel with the required octane number.
  9. The adjusting valve of a turbocompressor is damaged.
  10. Low compression pressure, or its uneven distribution between cylinders. Perform measurement of a compression which analysis of results allows to reveal existence of leakages of valves and/or violation of tightness of laying of a head of cylinders (Head Dvigateli).
  11. The gas-distributing belt is incorrectly established, or the effort of its tension weakened (The head Nastroyki both routine maintenance of the car and Engines).
  12. Brakes "are taken".
  13. Coupling revolves (models with RKPP) (The head Stsepleniye and power shafts).

Diesel engines

  1. The air cleaner is littered. Clear or replace.
  2. Uniformity of distribution of fuel from TNVD to cylinders is broken. Check, make the corresponding adjustment on the heated-up engine.
  3. The moment of the beginning of supply of TNVD fuel is incorrectly exposed. Check, make the corresponding adjustment.
  4. The fuel filter, TNVD, or any of nozzles is littered. Wash out the preliminary filter, replace an element of the filter of thin cleaning, clean a spray or replace a pump/nozzle.
  5. Adjustment of the maximum frequency of rotation of a bent shaft is broken.

There are cottons in system of an admission or shots in system of release

  1. Malfunction of components of a power supply system or electric equipment (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases and System of electric equipment of the engine) takes place.
  2. Defect in a secondary contour of system of ignition (destruction of insulators of spark plugs or defects of candle wires) (The head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine) takes place.
  3. Supply of fuel to injectors to injections/nozzles (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases) is broken.
  4. The system of injection of fuel needs adjustment, or its components (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases) are excessively worn-out.
  5. Losses of depression on the throttle case, the inlet pipeline or through vacuum hoses take place
  6. Valves (Head Dvigateli) are jammed.
  7. The order of connection of candle wires (The head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine) is broken.
  8. The gas-distributing belt is incorrectly established, or the effort of its tension weakened (The head Nastroyki both routine maintenance of the car and Engines).

At the movement with acceleration or uphill there are detonation sounds

  1. In the fuel tank fuel of poor quality is filled in.
  2. Malfunction of components of a power supply system or electric equipment (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases and System of electric equipment of the engine) takes place.
  3. Spark plugs not of that type are established. Check candles and coils for existence of damages (The head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine).
  4. The basic ECM installations are broken.
  5. The detonation sensor is faulty.
  6. Depression losses take place

Kalilny ignition takes place (the engine continues to work after switching off of ignition)

  1. Idling turns are excessively high (Head Dvigateli).
  2. Malfunction of components of a power supply system or electric equipment (The head Sistema of electric equipment of the engine) takes place.
  3. The valve of a purge of a coal adsorber of system of catching of fuel evaporations (EVAP) is damaged.
  4. Working temperature of the engine is excessively high. Decrease in level of a cooler (The head of the Cooling system of the engine, heating of salon and air conditioning), failure of the thermostat, blocking of a radiator or violation of serviceability of functioning of the water pump (The head of the Cooling system of the engine, heating of salon and air conditioning) can be the possible reasons of this violation.
  5. The excessive nagaroobrazovaniye in engine combustion chambers takes place (Head Dvigateli).
  6. Working temperature of the engine is excessively high.
  7. It is faulty locking Ý/m the valve (the diesel engine) (The head of the Power supply system, release and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases).

The exhaust of the diesel engine excessively smoke-filled

  1. Black smoke:
    1. The air cleaner is polluted. Blow or replace an element;
    2. In a tank inappropriate fuel is filled. Wash out a tank and replace fuel;
    3. The moment of the beginning of giving of TNVD is incorrectly determined.
  2. Blue smoke:
    1. Hit of oil in combustion chambers owing to wear of piston rings, high level of oil in the air cleaner, wear of epiploons in covers of a turbocompressor, formation of thinnesses in laying between a block case and a turbocompressor takes place. Repair the engine, establish the normal level of oil, replace epiploons, tighten bolts of fastening of a turbocompressor or replace laying;
    2. Supply of fuel to one of nozzles is broken. Check on heating of final branch pipes of a collector;
    3. Quality of dispersion of fuel by a nozzle because of malfunction of the valve or break of a spray is broken. Grind in the valve or replace a nozzle.
  3. White or brown smoke:
    1. Cooling liquid does not get warm up to the normal working temperature. Check serviceability of functioning of the thermostat;
    2. Serviceability of functioning of nozzles is broken owing to wear or break of a spray. Replace a spray.

The noise, smells and vibrations arising in the course of functioning of the engine

During acceleration or at increase in load of the engine there are knocks caused by too early ignition or a detonation

  1. For gas station of the car low-octane gasoline was used. Fill in qualitative fuel in the fuel tank.
  2. Installation of a corner of an advancing of ignition is broken. Check a condition of the corresponding information sensors and other components of system of ignition/engine management. Replace defective units.
  3. It is faulty, or the detonation sensor is too poorly tightened. Violation of effort of tightening of the sensor can lead to delay of ignition and, as a result, decrease in the power developed by the engine. Estimate a sensor condition, check effort of its tightening, in case of need make replacement.
  4. Non-standard spark plugs are established. Replace candles, track correctness of installation of interelectrode gaps.

At operation of the car in the high-speed mode it is better to establish "colder" candles.

  1. The excessive nagaroobrazovaniye in combustion chambers takes place. Use special additives to fuel, or make dismantling and decarbonization of a head of cylinders.
  2. Serviceability of functioning of system of food/engine management is broken. Check a condition of the corresponding information sensors and modules of management. Replace defective components.
  3. Passability of a path of system of production of the fulfilled gases is broken. Examine system components on existence of deformations and other mechanical defects. Compare temperature on an entrance and at the exit of the catalytic converter and muffler, - if temperature of the entering stream much more surpasses temperature of the corresponding component leaving, therefore, passability is broken.

During the operation of the engine there is a high-frequency squeal or whistle

  1. Belts of the drive of auxiliary units are worn-out, or the effort of their tension weakened. Check, make necessary adjustment, replace worn-out belts.
  2. Bearings of natyazhitel of auxiliary belts are worn-out or jammed. Check natyazhitel, in case of need make replacement of components.
  3. The water pump is faulty. The pump can not give leaks that does not exclude probability of wear of the bearing or weakening of landing/jamming of rotors. Replace the pump.

During the operation of the engine there is a metal gnash

  1. The water pump is faulty, or bolts of its fastening weakened. Check effort of tightening of fixture, replace the faulty pump.
  2. Bearings of natyazhitel of auxiliary belts are worn-out or jammed. Check natyazhitel, in case of need make replacement of components.

In operating time of the engine there are different knocks

  1. Serviceability of functioning of hydraulic proofreaders of valvate gaps in pushers is broken (on models of the corresponding complete set). Check the level and a condition of motive oil.
